Summit was selected by the Town of Danville and City of Madison as the prime consultant for a new pedestrian bridge across the Little Coal to complete a loop of the existing Wellness Trail located on opposite sides of the river.
Multiple bridge locations were evaluated in the vicinity before a viable location was determined. Site selection, design, and permitting was complicated by the fact that the existing walk paths were within CSX Railroad right-of-way, the are on both sides of the river was 10’ below base flood elevation, and there were numerous utility transmission lines (water, sewer, gas, overhead electric) within the selected bridge and approach trail location. Through careful planning and numerous coordination meetings, Summit was able gain approval for all necessary utility relocations, as well as construction permits and easements from the railroad and adjoining property owners. In order to ensure the low chord of the bridge was above the base flood elevation, the structure had to be located ±10’ above surrounding grade. To create Accessible approaches, elevated wooden boardwalk approached were designed with slopes and landings per ADA Guidelines, an constructed on helical piers. Summit performed a HEC-RAS analysis of the river and designed riverbank reshaping to accommodate the asphalt trail and prepared a No-Rise Certification in order to obtain the necessary floodplain permits.
